6 Things You Need To Know About Defensive Driving

February 15, 2022

Defensive driving is a must for anyone who wants to stay safe on the road. Whether you're a new driver or have been driving for years, it's important to know the basics of defensive driving. In this article, you will read about six things that everyone should know about defensive driving. Stay safe and vigilant behind the wheel by following these tips!

You Need To Know The Rules

To be a defensive driver, you need to know and follow all the rules of the road, and repetition is key. Whenever you feel like you're unsure about some rules you should take a DMV practice test so that you can be confident in knowing what to do when you're behind the wheel. Defensive driving is not only about knowing how to react in emergency situations, but also following all the rules of the road so that you don't put yourself and others in danger.

Make sure you know common traffic laws, like stopping for red lights and stop signs, yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, and knowing when you need to use a turn signal. There are plenty of other rules that you should be aware of too, so make sure you brush up on your state's specific laws before hitting the road.

Obey All Traffic Signs

You have to obey all the traffic signs when you’re driving defensively. That means the following

  • obeying speed limits
  • actually stopping at stop signs
  • yielding all signs that you come across
  • slowing down on yellow lights instead of speeding up
  • following lane markings
  • using your turn signals

If you can do all of that, then you’re well on your way to being a safe driver. Defensive driving is all about anticipating the actions of other drivers and trying to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. So make sure that you know how to obey all traffic signs. It could save your life.

You'll be keeping yourself safe as well as others on the road.

Beware Of Your Surroundings

You keep your eyes open at all times when you're driving, right? Defensive driving isn't just about being aware of the cars around you and anticipating their movements. It's also important to be aware of your surroundings on the side of the road and behind you.

There are a lot of things that can happen on the side of the road. Maybe there's a car broken down and its driver is trying to fix it, or maybe someone has run out of gas and is waiting for help. In either case, you need to be careful when passing by. If you see a hazard like this, slow down and give yourself plenty of room to pass safely.

It's also important to be aware of what's happening behind you. You should always keep an eye on the mirrors, and if you see anything that looks dangerous, like a car speeding up to pass you, pull over safely to the side of the road and let it pass.

Never Tailgate

One very risky method of driving is tailgating. This means to drive too close to the car in front of you, often less than two seconds behind it. When this happens there’s not enough time for you to stop as well, and a collision is likely.

In addition, aggressive driving like tailgating can cause traffic jams. So even if you think that your quick reflexes will allow you to safely pass the car in front of you by speeding up and cutting in quickly, remember that this also puts other drivers at risk.

Stay Within The Speed Limit Even When Other's Aren't

Even when you're tempted to go a little bit over the speed limit, staying within the speed limit is important when driving defensively. You never know when someone else might make an unexpected move and cause an accident. Driving safely means being aware of your surroundings at all times and staying within the speed limit will help you do that.

Plus, if you're caught speeding, you could end up with a ticket and no one wants that. Follow the law and stay safe on the roads by staying within the speed limit!

Don't Rush The Drivers In Front Of You

Be patient while driving, especially when someone is in front of you. It's not worth risking a collision just to save a few seconds. Remember: defensive driving means being aware of your surroundings and taking things slow and steady. You'll get where you're going safely and on time.

Don't lay on your horn, either. It won't make the driver in front of you move any faster and it'll just startle everyone around you. Save your horn for when you really need it!

Road rage doesn't solve anything and it can actually lead to worse situations. If you find yourself getting angry while driving, take a few deep breaths and try to relax.
