Real marble is not fragile. It has paved the floors of ancient Roman temples, lined the walls of Renaissance palaces, and sat on the desks of the world's finest offices for centuries. But it is a natural material — porous, living in a geological sense — and it rewards a small amount of attention with a lifespan that synthetic alternatives cannot match.
If you own a MIKOL piece, this guide is everything you need to care for it correctly.
Marble is calcium carbonate. This means it reacts to acid, etching the surface and dulling the finish over time if left untreated. The good news is that avoiding this is straightforward once you know the principles.
MIKOL pieces ship pre-sealed, which provides a protective barrier. But sealing is not permanent. Understanding the basics ensures your piece continues to look and feel as it should, year after year.
Do
• Wipe your marble piece with a soft, dry microfibre cloth at the end of each day
• Use a slightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning — always dry immediately after
• Store marble accessories away from other hard objects that could scratch the surface
• Handle your piece with clean, dry hands where possible
Avoid
• Acidic substances: citrus juice, vinegar, tomato, most hand sanitisers with citric acid
• Abrasive cleaners, sponges, or cloths — even slight abrasion dulls polished marble
• Prolonged exposure to water — brief contact is fine, soaking is not
• Harsh chemical cleaners, bleach, or ammonia-based products
iPhone Cases
Your iPhone case takes the most daily wear of any MIKOL piece. Remove it monthly, wipe both the case interior and the phone frame, and check the edges for any buildup. The marble face itself needs only occasional dry wiping. If the surface looks slightly dull after extended use, a small amount of mineral oil on a soft cloth, left for five minutes then buffed off, will restore depth and sheen.
Notebooks and Business Cards
These pieces are primarily handled rather than worn. Keep them away from wet surfaces. If your marble business card encounters a spill, wipe immediately with a dry cloth and allow to air dry. Do not store business cards pressed against acidic paper for extended periods.

Bracelets and Necklaces
Remove marble jewellery before swimming, showering, or applying perfume or lotion. Store individually in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent stone-on-stone contact. Marble is harder than most metals but can chip against other stone.
Wallets and Clutch Bags
The marble components of these pieces are structural panels rather than load-bearing surfaces. Avoid overfilling, which can stress the stone at the edges. Wipe with a dry cloth after use. The leather components respond well to occasional conditioning with a leather balm.
Over time, real marble develops what is called a patina — a subtle change in surface character from use and age. This is not damage. It is the stone recording its history.
A MIKOL piece that has been carried daily for two years will look different from one kept in a drawer. Neither is wrong. The lived piece has acquired something the new piece does not have: evidence of a life. Many of our longest-term customers tell us this is when they love their MIKOL pieces most.
If you prefer to preserve the original finish as closely as possible, reseal your piece once a year using a pH-neutral stone sealer available from any hardware or tile supplier. Apply with a soft cloth, leave for 15 minutes, buff off. That is the complete process.
Light surface scratches on polished marble can often be addressed with a marble polishing powder and a soft cloth, using gentle circular motion. Deep etching or chips require professional stone restoration — your local marble or tile specialist can advise.
