10 Tips for Designing a Luxury Home

November 24, 2025

Designing a luxury home should feel like sipping champagne on a rooftop terrace, not wrestling with electrical plans at 2:00 in the morning or debating marble versus quartz like your life depends on it.

Whether you're starting from scratch with a huge selection of plans or building your dream home piece by piece, creating a space that feels luxurious and liveable is totally doable. You just need a few guiding principles. Here are 10 tips to help you to craft a luxury home that feels polished, personal, and deliciously comfortable.

smart home design

  1. Start with the vision board. Luxury homes don't tend to begin with a blueprint, they begin with a vibe. Before you stress over dimensions or the great open floor plan VS defined spaces debate, build a vision board that captures the mood that you want. Think colors, materials, architectural styles, and inspirational details. Do you want Mediterranean villa energy? Sleek, modern art gallery vibes? Or maybe you want to feel like a movie star every time you walk down the stairs? Whatever that may be, pin it on the board. The clearer your vision, the smoother everything else becomes. It's absolutely fine if your board looks like a collage of your favorite hotels and that European Airbnb stock and Instagram. Luxury is 90% aspiration.

  2. Prioritise your layout before the fancy stuff. You can buy all the chandeliers in the world, but if the layout doesn't flow, your home will feel more chaotic than chic. Start by considering how you actually live. Do you entertain often? Do you want the kitchen connected to the outdoor living area? Do certain family members need quiet zones? Do you want a primary suite that feels like a private apartment? Luxury is all about convenience, and the most expensive finishes won't matter if you're constantly bumping into furniture or if your dining room ends up feeling like a hallway with chairs.

  3. Make the entrance memorable. Your entryway is your home's opening line. Its handshake, its Instagram profile picture, its red carpet debut. However you want to say it, first impressions matter. You don't need Versailles level gilding, but a luxury home should offer something more memorable the second you walk through the door. Whatever your style may be, go for a moment that makes guests say that that is nice, even if they just come over to borrow some sugar.

  4. Choose materials that will age like a fine wine. Luxury is timelessness and nothing kills a high end design faster than materials at scuff, chip or fade before the house warming party is over. Invest in finishes and textures that look better with age, like solid wood flooring, natural stone, high quality hardware and durable upholstery fabrics.

  5. Lighting: The unsung hero of luxury design. Lighting is what makes the difference between a nice kitchen and a magazine shoot layout. You want layered lighting throughout your home, ambient lighting for overall task, lighting for functional and accent lighting for a little flare of drama. Mixing these three creates depth and warmth in your home. And please install dimmers! Everything looks luxurious at 60%.A bonus tip here is that oversized lighting fixtures always look more expensive. Tiny pendant lights over a massive island? Absolutely not.

home design tips
  1. Create a Spa-worthy primary suite. If your bedroom doesn't make you sigh in relief when you walk in, it's not luxury, it's just square footage. Give your primary suite the spa treatment. A bathroom with double vanity that has gorgeous tiles and a soaking tub, a shower with multiple sprayers, soft muted lighting and a walk-in closet that sparks joy, or at least sparks better wardrobe organization. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, not a place where laundry goes to die.

  2. Build indoor outdoor flow like you live in California. The luxury home trifecta is big windows, sliding doors, and outdoor living spaces. Even in the colder climates. Creating visual and physical continuity between indoor and outdoor areas can elevate the entire house. You want covered patios, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and large windows that frame nature like artwork. It's all about expanding your living space and making the home feel both grand and breathable.

  3. Add some ‘wow’ moments into unexpected places. Luxury design thrives on delightful surprises. Think tiny doses of glamour tucked into practical spaces like wallpaper in the powder room, a custom wine wall, a skylight over the shower and bold tiles in the laundry room. Luxury doesn't always require a big gesture. Sometimes the magic is in the details that people notice when they least expect it.

  4. Think tech, but make it invisible. Smart home features can feel luxurious until they become the visual equivalent of a tangled extension cord. Integrate your technology seamlessly with built in speakers, hidden outlets, automated shades, smart thermostats, seamlessly mounted TV's and more. The best luxury tech will blend into the background like a discrete Butler. It will be helpful and efficient, but never showing off.

  5. Personalize like a pro. Let's be clear here, luxury is not about copying what you find on Pinterest. It's about crafting a space that feels like you, only slightly more glamorous. Think about the hobbies that you have that deserve a dedicated space, or what colours make you the happiest. Which personal items could be displayed thoughtfully? Luxury should reflect your life, not your contractor's catalog, and you want your house to feel curated, not constructed.

A luxury home is exciting, creative, stressful, and occasionally downright ridiculous. You'll debate everything from grout coloring to force it finishes to whether your country needs a window. It doesn't, by the way, but if you want one, follow your bliss. The goal isn't perfection, but it's comfort wrapped in elegance, function wrapped in flair.

Remember that luxury is not a price tag, but a feeling. It's a sense of ease, beauty and a little bit of drama. If your house makes you smile every time you turn the key, then you know that you've done it right.

Now go forth and design boldly.
